We added a little metal to the garden to offset the strength of the greens. This bed is a bit overgrown with an abundance of (fast spreading) coreopsis and a variety of roses. Flowering of the roses has been spotty the last two years and once the flowers (yellow) of the coreopsis are spent, the bed becomes a little too green. The metal, and the stone wall border, work to offset this effect. Additionally, I sometimes place a series of small tin and terra cotta pots along the edge of the retaining wall.

A birdhouse makes a fantastic addition to any garden. This one, an antique from the South, used to be home to Purple Martins. No such luck here on Cape Cod. This addition to the garden served as the perfect safe house for a few sparrows and was home to (by my count) 6 chicks.
